It is not an infection specific to a sexual orientation, nationality or population group. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.ee\/en\/hiv\/how-is-hiv-transmitted\/\"><strong>HIV is transmitted<\/strong><\/a> during unprotected sex, through exposure to infected blood, and from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth and through breast milk. People at highest risk are those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.ee\/en\/hiv\/who-are-at-higher-risk-for-getting-hiv\/\"><strong>who exhibit risk-behaviour<\/strong><\/a> or those who in their everyday jobs carry a risk of exposure to bodily fluids infected with HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HIV is a long-term and slowly progressing infection that destroys the body\u2019s ability to defend itself against diseases that people with a healthy immune system rarely go through or that are caused by relatively safe bacteria, fungi and other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Living with HIV does not mean that the person is sick. HIV causes a chronic condition that can be kept under control with medication. If left untreated, HIV can develop into AIDS in the final stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Unfortunately, as of yet there is no effective vaccine for HIV to protect people from getting infected. But there are steps you can take to protect yourself from HIV:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.ee\/en\/protect-yourself\/\"><strong>protection<\/strong><\/a> when having sex;<\/li><li>Avoid casual sex;<\/li><li>Avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.ee\/en\/hiv\/how-is-hiv-transmitted\/\"><strong>contact with blood<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is HIV?
