You may not think of yourself as at risk for diseases but the regular health check-ups of every sexually active person should include getting tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

By getting tested you can keep your health under control
Many sexually transmitted infections may go without any visible symptoms and complaints. Nonetheless, such an infection may affect your health and you may infect your partners. That is why it is a good idea to get tested regularly, even if you have no complaints. Testing is the only sure way to find out whether or not you have been infected.
If you are at high risk for getting HIV (for instance, you have a lot of casual partners), you might want to consider using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This medicine significantly reduces the risk of becoming infected when exposed to HIV.
What does a free sexual health check-up include?

- Based on the patient’s medical history and examination, samples are taken for diagnosing the following infections:
- Gonorrhoea
- Trichomoniasis
- Chlamydia
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- If necessary, a blood sample is taken for the following:
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C

Other possibilities for a sexual health check-up
You can also get a sexual health check-up at any health care institution across Estonia. You can also get tested for sexually transmitted infections by a dermatovenerologist, urologist or andrologist. If you go to a medical specialist, you will have to pay a visit fee. And a fee will also be charged for testing, unless you have health insurance. People up to the age of 26 years can get a free check-up (even with no health insurance) at youth counselling centres. Free-of-charge testing for HIV, HBV and HCV is available at HIV counselling and testing clinics.
